WITH over 90 years of operating in Fiji, Motibhai Group’s successes and contributions continue to receive recognition as a leader in Fiji’s business community.
From consumer goods, luxury products, electronics, fast food, and beverages, to perfume and cosmetics, they have been a leading wholesaler and distributor of goods and services in Fiji, currently employing more than 1200 Fijians in their various outlets and factories around the country.
At the 2024 Fiji Human Resources Institute (FHRI) Awards held in Suva, the Group scooped five awards, a testament to “commitment to excellence in human resources (HR) practices,” according to Sanjay Kumar, Group manager People Culture, Admin and Insurances.
The awards were:
Mr. Kumar told The Fiji Times that the awards were a testament to their commitment to excellence in human resources (HR) practices.
“These achievements confirm the Group’s innovative approach to employee development, leadership, diversity, inclusion, and reinforce the company’s reputation as a leader in people management,” he said.
“In a market where competition for top talent is fierce, these awards showcase the group’s efforts in providing an environment where employees can thrive and grow professionally.”
He said the company has built a legacy of resilience and adaptability, especially in the ever-changing market conditions.
“From its early days as a small grocery shop to becoming a leader in Fiji’s business community, the organisation has constantly sought new opportunities to meet the evolving needs of its customers. Whether by investing in technology, expanding into new markets and businesses, or modernising operations, the company has kept pace with the ever-changing business environment.
“Also, under the agile leadership of chairman and chief executive officer Kirit Patel, Motibhai has exhibited strong and visionary leadership. This visionary leadership has guided the company through economic challenges and global crises while ensuring long-term growth and sustainability.”
Mr. Kumar said by continuously investing in employee development and with the engagement of local and international trainers, the company has been able to create a skilled and motivated workforce.
“Motibhai Group’s success is built on the strength of its people. We say, ‘Our People, Our Strength’.
“Focusing on continuous learning, career growth and employee satisfaction has helped the organisation weather challenges and assure a conducive and thriving working environment for its employees.”
Talking about the HR Transformative Leader award which he won, Mr Kumar said he has always been driven by the goal of transforming the organisation, and this was an incredible achievement for him.
This is his second national-level recognition after winning a Gold Award in 2023 for HR Manager of the Year.
“At the heart of my success is an unwavering belief in people as the cornerstone of business success. My commitment to empowering employees, fostering their professional growth and creating a work environment that values their contributions is what makes me stand out.
“Ensuring that employees feel supported, heard, and invested in is a key motivator in my leadership approach. This involves implementing forward-thinking HR strategies, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, and embracing innovation to make HR processes more efficient and impactful.
“My motivation also stems from working closely with a visionary leader like Mr Patel, culminating with his win in the Visionary Leader; his support and belief in employee development have inspired me. His dedication to servant leadership and employee empowerment has shaped my own leadership philosophy, motivating me to take the helm in driving transformative HR practices at Motibhai.”
Mr. Kumar also credited his HR team for their collective commitment to excellence, innovation, and employee well-being.
One of the five awards includes a Gold Award for HR Environment and Sustainability in Practice.
According to Mr. Kumar, this was a significant achievement for them as it recognised the company’s commitment to “integrating sustainable practices into its operations and HR strategies”.
“This award not only recognises Motibhai’s leadership in sustainability but also signals that the company is setting a benchmark for how businesses in Fiji can contribute to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
“Motibhai has taken steps toward reducing its carbon footprint by investing in renewable energy sources. One very good example is the solar panel installation at the Motibhai Business Park, and other key locations are in the offing.
“This initiative helps reduce the reliance on non-renewable energy sources and lowers overall energy consumption. Motibhai’s sustainability efforts extend beyond its business operations. The company is involved in various CSR initiatives that support community welfare and environmental preservation.”
The company also won the Gold Award for HR Talent Development.
Mr. Kumar said this was a testament to the Group’s commitment to investing in its employees’ growth, skill development, and long-term career success.
Motibhai has developed a robust framework for learning and development (L&D), ensuring that employees at all levels have access to the training and resources necessary for professional and personal growth.
“Another cornerstone of Motibhai’s HR Talent Development strategy is its mentoring and coaching programs, which focus on helping employees develop the mindset and skills needed to take on senior management roles, equipping them with the strategic thinking, leadership qualities, and decision-making abilities necessary for driving the company forward.
“The award signifies that Motibhai is creating a sustainable foundation for growth, with a workforce that is skilled, engaged, and ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
“Notwithstanding this in terms of talent development, we take pride in being a diversified company with over 1,200 staff, where only one management position is held by an expatriate, and all are homegrown talent.”
Looking forward, Mr. Kumar said the aim of the Motibhai Group in terms of human resources “is not to rest on laurels but continue to cultivate a dynamic, inclusive, and future-ready workforce that can drive the company’s growth while aligning with modern HR practices and the evolving needs of the business.”
“The company’s focus is on creating a workplace where employees feel valued, supported, and motivated to stay and grow their careers within the organisation.”
